How the facial proportions calculator works
Detection uses Google's MediaPipe Face Landmarker, running on your device.
- 1
Upload a selfie
Use a clear, front-facing photo or your camera. Face the lens straight on in even light.
- 2
Landmarks are measured
Brow, nose base, mouth and chin heights are measured, plus pupil distance and eye width.

Facial thirds and the midface ratio
The neoclassical canon splits the face into three equal thirds: hairline to brow, brow to nose base, and nose base to chin. The lower third splits again — one part above the mouth, two below.
The midface ratio compares the distance between your pupils to the height from your pupils to your upper lip. Around 1.0 to 1.1 reads compact.
Using facial proportions for hair and makeup
Facial proportions are most useful as a styling map. If your lower third is longer than your middle third, fuller hair at cheek level and a softer lip line balance it. If your middle third is longer, a fringe or blush placed lower on the cheeks shortens it visually.
The midface ratio is popular online as a measure of a compact face. A lower ratio means the space between eyes and mouth is shorter relative to eye spacing. Like all of these ratios, it varies naturally across people and ethnic groups.
Use photos taken from arm's length or further with the camera at eye level. Tilting your head up or down changes the thirds dramatically, so keep your chin level, ideally with your ears in line with your eyes.
Facial proportions calculator FAQ
Is it really free?
Yes. No sign-up, no watermark and no usage limits. The analysis runs in your browser.
Is my photo uploaded?
No. Detection runs locally with Google's MediaPipe model, so your photo never leaves your device.
What photo works best?
A straight-on photo at eye level, from arm's length or further, in soft daylight. Pull hair off your face, remove glasses and keep a neutral expression.
Why isn't the upper third measured?
Face landmarks stop below the hairline, so the upper third can't be measured reliably from them. Check it in a mirror: it should be roughly equal to your middle third.
Are equal thirds the ideal?
Equal thirds come from classical art. Real faces vary, and many attractive faces have unequal thirds.
What is the lip-to-chin ratio?
The distance from nose base to mouth compared with mouth to chin. The classic ideal is about one to two.
