The three body types

Most people are a mix of two somatotypes.

  • Ectomorph

A lean, linear build with a smaller frame, narrow shoulders and hips, and a fast-feeling metabolism. Gaining weight or muscle takes deliberate effort.

  • Mesomorph

A medium-to-large frame with broader shoulders, a defined waist and muscle that builds readily. The classic 'athletic' build.

  • Endomorph

A larger, rounder frame with a wider waist and hips, and a body that stores energy readily. Strong and sturdy, often powerful in strength sports.

Body type vs body shape vs Kibbe

Body type (somatotype) describes your build — lean, muscular or rounder. Body shape describes your silhouette from bust, waist and hip measurements. Kibbe types describe your overall line and essence for styling.

Each answers a different question, so it's worth knowing all three.

How the body type calculator estimates your build

Frame size comes from your height divided by your wrist circumference, a standard method used in nutrition guides. A small frame pushes toward ectomorph, a large frame toward endomorph or mesomorph. BMI and waist-to-height then show how much mass that frame carries.

Shoulder-to-waist ratio separates a muscular build from a heavier one with similar weight. A high ratio adds to the mesomorph score; a high waist-to-height adds to endomorph. The three scores become percentages, so you see your mix rather than a single label.

Somatotypes were proposed in the 1940s and are now used loosely in fitness. They describe tendencies, not destiny. Training and nutrition move your scores over time, so recalculate every few months if you're working toward a goal.

Measure in the morning, before eating, in light clothing. Keep the tape snug but not tight and parallel to the floor. For shoulders, wrap the tape around the widest point over your arms with them relaxed at your sides. Small errors matter less than consistency, so use the same method each time you recalculate and compare trends rather than single results.

Body type calculator FAQ

Are my measurements saved?

No. The body type calculator runs entirely in your browser and doesn't store anything.

Can my body type change?

Your frame doesn't change, but training and nutrition shift where you sit between the three types.

Is BMI accurate for muscular people?

Not very — it can't tell muscle from fat. That's why the calculator also uses frame size and body ratios.

Can I be two body types?

Yes, most people are a mix. A close second shows as a combined result like ecto-mesomorph.
