How the forehead shape detector works

Detection uses Google's MediaPipe Face Landmarker, running on your device.

  1. 1

    Upload a selfie

Use a clear, front-facing photo or your camera. Face the lens straight on in even light.

  2. 2

    Landmarks are measured

Your forehead width is compared to your cheekbones, and the curve of the top contour is measured.

Types of forehead shapes

The detector sorts foreheads by width and curve. Hairline shapes are covered below.

  • Broad

The forehead is about as wide as, or wider than, the cheekbones.

  • Narrow

The forehead is noticeably narrower than the cheekbones.

  • Round

The forehead curves smoothly at the top with soft temples.

  • Square

A flatter top line with defined, straight-ish sides at the temples.

  • Balanced

Average width and a gently curved top — proportionate to the rest of the face.

M-shaped forehead and widow's peak

An M-shaped forehead has a hairline that recedes at both temples, while a widow's peak dips to a V in the center. Both are hairline shapes rather than forehead bone shapes, so check them in a mirror with your hair pulled back.

Textured fringes and side parts soften an M-shape; slicked-back or side-swept styles show off a widow's peak.

Choosing a hairstyle for your forehead shape

A forehead reads as broad or narrow relative to your cheekbones, not on its own. That's why the detector compares the two widths instead of measuring the forehead alone. A broad forehead pairs well with fringes and volume lower down; a narrow one benefits from lift at the temples.

Height matters too. A high forehead can be balanced with curtain bangs or a side part, while a low forehead looks best with hair swept back to open it up. Middle parts make any forehead look more symmetrical but also highlight width.

Remember that hairline shape is separate from forehead shape. Check for a widow's peak or a receding M-shape in a mirror, since those change which fringes sit flat. Our hairstyle guide pairs each face shape with cuts that work.

Forehead shape detector FAQ

Is it really free?

Yes. No sign-up, no watermark and no usage limits. The analysis runs in your browser.

Is my photo uploaded?

No. Detection runs locally with Google's MediaPipe model, so your photo never leaves your device.

What photo works best?

A straight-on photo at eye level, from arm's length or further, in soft daylight. Pull hair off your face, remove glasses and keep a neutral expression.

Is a big forehead a bad thing?

No. Many models and actors have high or broad foreheads. It only changes which fringes and partings frame your face best.

Can I check my forehead without a photo?

Pull your hair back and compare forehead width with cheekbone width in a mirror, using your fingers or a ruler.
