How the eye shape detector works
Detection uses Google's MediaPipe Face Landmarker, running on your device.
- 1
Upload a selfie
Use a clear, front-facing photo or your camera. Face the lens straight on in even light.
- 2
Landmarks are measured
Eye width, height, corner tilt and the gap between lid and brow are measured on both eyes.
- 3

6 eye shapes the detector recognizes
Plus spacing: close-set, wide-set or balanced.
Almond
Wider than they are tall, with corners that taper to a soft point and a slight lift at the outer edge. The most versatile eye shape for makeup.
Round
Eyes that look open and tall, with visible white above or below the iris. They read bright and youthful.
Upturned
The outer corners sit noticeably higher than the inner corners, giving a natural cat-eye lift.
Downturned
The outer corners dip slightly below the inner corners, which can read gentle and soulful.
Hooded
A fold of skin from the brow bone covers part of the lid, so less lid space shows when the eyes are open.
Monolid
A smooth lid with little or no visible crease. The lid space is a great canvas for gradient color.
Eyeliner by eye shape: quick guide
Eyeliner works best when it follows your natural angle. Almond eyes can take a classic wing. Round eyes look longer when the liner extends past the outer corner and stays thin in the middle. Upturned eyes need little lift, while downturned eyes benefit from a wing that angles up rather than following the lower lash line.
Hooded and monolid eyes need placement you can see with your eyes open. Apply liner and shadow while looking straight into a mirror, building color above the crease or from the lash line upward, and pick waterproof formulas so nothing transfers.
Spacing changes the plan too. Wide-set eyes look closer with darker inner corners; close-set eyes look wider with a bright inner corner and darker outer third. The detector reports both shape and spacing so you can combine the tips.
Eye shape detector FAQ
Is it really free?
Yes. No sign-up, no watermark and no usage limits. The analysis runs in your browser.
Is my photo uploaded?
No. Detection runs locally with Google's MediaPipe model, so your photo never leaves your device.
What photo works best?
A straight-on photo at eye level, from arm's length or further, in soft daylight. Pull hair off your face, remove glasses and keep a neutral expression.
Can I have more than one eye shape?
Yes. Many people have, for example, almond eyes that are slightly hooded. The detector shows your main shape and secondary traits as tags.
Do my two eyes have the same shape?
Often not exactly. The detector averages both eyes; check each side in a mirror if one looks more hooded.
Does eye shape change with age?
Yes. Skin above the lid loosens over time, so many people become more hooded with age.
